Indie distributor Persimmon has acquired North American rights to “Bird in Hand,” the latest release from The Future of Film Is Female, written and directed by Melody C. Roscher (Producer of “Christine” and “Martha Marcy May Marlene”). Following its festival run—including its World Premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival—the film will begin a nationwide limited theatrical release on October 2, followed by a digital release in December.

Inspired by Roscher’s own biracial experience, “Bird in Hand” follows newly engaged Bird Rowe (Alisha Wainwright) as she returns to her rural hometown to plan her wedding alongside her narcissistic hippie mother, Carlotta (Christine Lahti). Their already strained relationship becomes even more complicated when Bird pursues a hidden agenda that leads her to her mother’s new neighbors: a misguided couple determined to “rebrand” a plantation.

As truth, lies, and fantasy collide, Bird finds herself caught in an increasingly surreal situation that builds toward a surprising climax—one that is as tender as it is funny.
